SALEM MAR THOMA CHURCH

"Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation."

– Psalm 95:1

Parish History

By the abundant grace and mercy of Almighty God, Salem Mar Thoma Church, Eastern Long Island, traces its origins to the year 2003. What began as a small prayer fellowship among Mar Thoma families residing in the Suffolk and Nassau counties of New York gradually took shape as a committed and growing worshipping community.

Through the dedicated efforts and leadership of Mr. Abraham C. Thadathel, along with several other devoted families, the foundation was laid for the establishment of a parish. On October 18, 2003, an interim committee was formed and entrusted with the responsibility of submitting a formal application to the then Diocesan Bishop, Rt. Rev. Dr. Euyakim Mar Coorilos Episcopa. Upon his recommendation, the Episcopal Synod approved the formation of the parish, effective July 1, 2004. Rev. Dr. Koshy Mathew was appointed as the first Vicar of the newly established parish.

The first worship service of Salem Mar Thoma Church was held on July 11, 2004, at 75 Caleb’s Path, Central Islip, New York. The official approval of the parish by the Synod and the celebration of the first Holy Communion service were not just ceremonial moments, they were the beginning of a legacy. A legacy firmly built on prayer, worship, service and purpose.

Over the years, the parish has been shepherded by several devoted and visionary Achens, each contributing meaningfully to its spiritual growth and organizational development. Under their pastoral guidance, Salem Mar Thoma Church has continued to grow as a Christ centered community, grounded in the teachings and traditions of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church. The parish is enriched by its active and vibrant organizations, including the Sunday School, Youth Fellowship, Yuvajana Sakhyam, Sevika Sanghom, Choir, Edavaka Mission, and Senior Citizen Fellowship. These ministries play a vital role in nurturing faith across generations, strengthening fellowship, and extending the church’s mission beyond its walls. The children of the parish gather regularly to grow in the knowledge of God’s Word, the choir enhances worship through sacred music, and the mission and service initiatives reflect a spirit of compassion and outreach.

Today, Salem Mar Thoma Church stands strong with 97 families and three active area prayer groups formed geographically based on the residence of its members. Monthly prayer meetings continue to foster a fellowship rooted in love, service, and unity. The parish warmly welcomes new members into its fellowship and remains deeply grateful to all its members for their unwavering support, faithful participation, and generous financial contributions.

From its humble beginnings in 2003 to its present standing as a spiritually vibrant and united parish, the journey of Salem Mar Thoma Church is a testimony to God’s abiding grace and the steadfast commitment of its members. As the parish looks to the future, it continues to stand firm in faith, committed to serving Christ, nurturing generations, and bearing witness to His love in the wider community.
